One Room Challenge Week 7: A Review of The Plan and Where I'm At
We’re closing in on the One Room Challenge and this is officially my last update before the final reveal!
Before I dig in this week, I would like to look at my plans from the beginning of this challenge and see where I’m at.
The Plan, Seven Weeks Ago:
Starting here with View One. I’ll list out my original intentions and then update each point on how it’s going. I’m also adding a rating scale of if I think it will get done this week on a scale of 1 to 10. 1 meaning that it is very unlikely, 9 being very likely and 10/10 meaning I already completed it. Let’s get into it:
The Original Plan
-Add color or interest to the walls
-I have several paint swatches, but if I’m being honest, my enthusiasm is pretty low. I want the major elements of the design to come from things I can take with me. While I am all for the room looking even more special with paint, I really want it to look as special as possible without relying on a new paint color. This one might not happen this week. (2/10)
-Replace Art with something textural, natural and whimsical
-I glued up a wooden frame to fit this space, but my plan is not clear. I could order canvas, staple it onto the frame and paint a forest motif. I really love the idea of a leafy piece of art, but I’m not sure I’m focused enough to guarantee it being finished. (7/10)
-Change Lampshade
-I have a plan, I have the materials on hand and I have already done most of the prep work. I think this could happen with a small amount of effort (8/10)
-Bring in Color and Style with Pillows
-I have two new beauitful velvet pillow covers from Etsy that look great. I was hoping to also have two more pillows made from tapestry material, but I think we can call this portion finished for now (10/10)
-Change Pot
-I added a second layer of air dry clay and painted the exterior a sage green from some left over paint samples I had laying around. It’s not ground breaking, but it does look more interesting than before (10/10)
-Reupholster sofa to a neutral color
-Well, well, well. If it isn’t me, a person who 100% finished this project. I now have a neutral sofa that looks great and has made the rest of this project so much easier. (10/10)
-Replace Rug with a 9x12
-After some major deliberation, I decided to stick with an 8x10 rug. That being said, it has been selected, ordered, delivered, installed, and I am very happy with it. Our previous rug was just picked up last week by a friend and in its new home. (10/10)
-Add vases above bookshelf
-I decided to try my hand at paper mâché this week. I have three vases formed, but still in need of the newspaper layers and paint. This might take effort, but I’m already in it, so let’s say it’s going to be finished this week (9/10)
-Add quirk or personality on side table and chair
-Regrettably, these spaces are quirkless. I have no plan in the works right now, but with the rest of the room improving, this doesn’t feel urgent. I will keep looking for interesting pieces whenever I go thrifting, but I’m okay if that process takes time (3/10)
-Consider replacing round mirror
-Similar to above, I haven’t put effort into this, but it doesn’t feel urgent. I would love a unique oil painting here, but I am willing to wait for the right piece. (3/10)
-Possibly add a transom detail
-lol. Out of everything, this is probably the most unrealistic. No real effort made, nor do I want to invest in something so specific to this exact space (0/10, not going to happen)
-Extend cord covers to baseboard
-I have longer cord covers purchased and in house now. I was waiting to install them until after I decided about painting the walls. Either way, they will be up by reveal day (9/10)
-Replace or expand art behind tv
-I really want to pull this off, but it might not be realistic for this week. If I did something, it would likely be one large scale piece. I would love to have this updated this week, but if not I might put some effort to still completing it in the next few weeks.
-Create interest with sconce shades
-I did this! I made new sconce shades out of wire and rice paper and also have some botanical brass creation hanging off of them as well. (10/10)
-Add detail above the front door
-This might happen? I have a few garland-y things that could work, though my original vision was more of a paint detail. We’ll see what I can pull off in the coming days. (6/10)
-Add candle sconce
-Thanks to a surprisingly successful thrift find while visiting family, I have an extremely cool candle sconce that rotates as you move it. I love it and it looks great where it’s hanging (10/10)
-Add new plate cover
-Haven’t done this or ordered this, but for roughly $8 dollars and 30 seconds of work, this could get done? (5/10)
-Consider hanging something on the back of the door
-I have a few ideas for this which would be so fun and potentially low effort but I’m not charging ahead either (5/10)
-Add vases above the bookcase
-I covered this earlier and will get right back to working on it as soon as I’m done writing this update. Fingers crossed it goes as planned. (9/10)
Looking Ahead
Well, there you have it. Some wins, some partial efforts and some fully abandoned ideas. All in all, I’m happy with what I’ve accomplished so far. And while it wasn’t in my original list, I also added a ceiling light which was a big endeavor and worth a few of the smaller things falling through the cracks.
Like the rest of you, I’m unsure what the room will look like next week, but I am eager to see what happens!
See you next time,
-Aimee
